Biological Engineering

Description of the current research topics

·         Structural and analytical characterisation of raw glycerol.

·         Screening and microbiological characterisation of bacteria.

·         Control and optimisation of up stream processing techniques: liquid-liquid-extraction, electrodialysis, ion exchange, active carbon filtration.

·         Control and optimisation of down stream processing techniques: filtration, coagulation, flotation, centrifugation, vacuum distillations.

·         Investigations on preconditioning techniques of raw glycerol.

·         Bioconversion of fermentation broth; process optimisation in cell and reactor type versions.

Available expertise and services

As an expert centre for ‘biodiesel’ related topics (chemical, biochemical, enzymatic and automotive) we offer practical support in items dealing with industrial processing of ‘biofuel’ waste streams. We have created a specialized analytical-physicochemical-platform for industry support: in other words, we present ourselves as experts for sustainable technology and development concerning renewable carbon resources.

Equipment is available and/or services can be provided on the following items:

§       Analytic and physicochemical instrumentation (XRF, FTIR, exclusion chromatography, Controlled bio-fermentor with in situ sterilisation, pumps, probes and data acquisition.

§       Anaerobic incubator, Autoclave, Airflow chamber, Temperature controlled Centrifuge.

§       A microscope with projection screen.

§       Chemical engineering separation and purification instruments.
